What Is Consolidation and Deconsolidation?

What is Consolidation?

Consolidation is a technical term used in shipping and logistics, referring to the process of combining several smaller shipments into one shipment.

The Theory Behind Consolidation

In the shipping industry, it's common for shippers to send less than full load (LTL) shipments. The idea behind consolidation is that by combining these smaller shipments, shipping could potentially become cheaper or more economical. However, this is not always the case in practice, as there is a cost associated with the time and space required for consolidation. This can also be complicated when smaller shipments are not arriving at the same time, as other shipments may need to be held back to allow for consolidation.

What is Deconsolidation?

Deconsolidation is the opposite of consolidation, referring to the process of breaking down a large shipment into smaller units. This may be necessary for various reasons, such as when a shipment needs to be delivered to multiple end retailers. Like consolidation, deconsolidation also comes with its own set of costs in terms of time and money.
