Refrigerated Trailer Transport: What to Know

In shipping and logistics, some types of goods or cargo need to be transported in very specific temperature-controlled environments. These types of goods are transported in refrigerated trailers, often referred to as “reefers”. 

For today’s blog article, we are going to talk about refrigerated trailer transport and what you should know about it. 

What Is a Reefer? 

So, the reefer is the trailer which is temperature controlled to refrigerate cargo at a certain temperature or within a certain temperature range. There are a few different ways to power refrigeration, but fundamentally, heat is removed from the unit with circulating coolants, a compressor, condenser, and an evaporator. 

What is also important is that cargo must be protected from freezing. While it may be necessary to ship products cold, the products cannot be too cold, just within a prescribed range of temperatures. 

What Types of Products Are Shipped Like This? 

It is usually food or beverages or pharmaceutical products that require cold transport. But it really could be anything. These products may have a very narrow range of temperature required. 

Why Is Refrigerated Transport More Expensive? 

Refrigerated transport is more expensive because the equipment needed to keep the products cold is more expensive than a trailer that doesn’t have any of that equipment. Also, the loading and unloading of refrigerated products may have special handling requirements. All of these things add to the cost.
